It’s Never Too Late to Learn

Food education refers to the process of acquiring knowledge and skills related to food, nutrition, cooking, and healthy eating habits. It encompasses various aspects, including understanding the nutritional value of different foods, learning how to prepare balanced and nutritious meals, and developing awareness of sustainable food practices all of which contribute to a healthier lifestyle and a reduced risk of developing illnesses such as Diabetes or heart disease.

At Food is Fun, we are passionate about educating people. No matter what your age, you are never too old to learn. Our initiatives emphasise the importance of mindful eating, encouraging individuals to develop a positive relationship with food and appreciate the sensory aspects of eating. The messages we teach are instrumental in promoting health, fostering culinary creativity, and cultivating a sense of responsibility towards food choices and their broader implications. We look at how healthy eating habits can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. We encourage the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats.

The Food Is Fun Enrichment Programme for Young People

The Food Is Fun Enrichment Programme has been developed to help schools deliver elements of Food Technology and to promote healthy eating. We believe that in addition to children learning about balanced diets and the mechanics of food we must also communicate the fun of cooking and being able to produce healthy food that is good to eat. We create a memorable event through live, interactive food sessions tailored to the specific needs of the school. The events use a mixture of show-and-tell, cookery demonstrations, tasting and hands-on activities to communicate the benefits of healthy, tasty eating.

What People are Saying

The Year 6 children here at Knowle Primary School thoroughly enjoyed the Food is Fun School to Scale project, and were completely hooked from the outset. They extend a hearty thank you to Tami for allowing them the opportunity to take part.

Having worked with Tami on many occasions, we were thrilled to be involved with this new project and the children gained so much from it. As well being a thoroughly enriching experience for the children (with the cooking element and show and tell), the project supported children’s education of current environmental and health issues. They investigated areas such as the problems associated with plastic pollution, the declining health of our oceans and the benefits of eating fish. The project was engaging and linked to so many areas of our curriculum. We will definitely be inviting Foodisfun.org back to Knowle soon and look forward to learning more about the food we should be eating and from whence it came!

Many thanks,

Jan and Jane

Year 6 Teachers, Knowle Primary

This is the second year that ‘Food is Fun’ has visited the school to support and enrich the ‘Cooking and nutrition’ element of our Design and Technology curriculum.

The curriculum states that at Key stage 1 ‘Pupils should be taught to use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes’ and should ‘understand where food comes from’.

At Key Stage 2 pupils should also ‘apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet; prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques; understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed’.

The ‘Food is Fun’ programme fulfils all these requirements and more:

  • The first session introduced the Year 6 children to a variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices at different stages of processing – fresh, dried, crystalized, packet; some were easily recognisable while others were more unusual generating great discussion. The children were asked to use all their senses to explore the foods and how we taste food was explained.
  • The second session introduced the children to the ‘Eatwell Plate’ and looked at how to eat a healthy, balanced diet. They then used their understanding of different food groups to design and make ‘healthy’ pizzas, learning knife skills and a variety of techniques used in the cooking process.
  • The final session involved the children planning, designing and bringing to life their own pop-up restaurant on a Greek theme.

Boringdon Primary School

“The whole project we found to be a great success, hence we are again following the programme this year. The children were introduced to cooking and nutrition in a whole new way and worked enthusiastically throughout, exceeding our expectations in their catering roles at the Pop-Up restaurant. We would certainly recommend Food is Fun to other schools wishing to enrich their curriculum.”

“We had a lovely time taking part in the Food is Fun experience. The team were really friendly and enthusiastic which encouraged our children to have a go. The pop up restaurant was a brilliant experience for our children taking turns in preparing, serving and eating the food that they had chosen for that day. We were all very tired after all the cleaning up was done but it was worth it to see the children having such a good time.”
